Society members ought to accept People with Disabilities on political participation including in leadership positions.

Executive Secretary of Union for Women with Disabilities Zanzibar (UWWZ), Mwandawa Khamis said , people with disabilities are excluded from political posts due to their disabilities and not inabilities.

Ms Khamis said that during a one day meeting organized by Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) and UN Women at her office Amaani, Urban West Region, Unguja.

She said due to this social flaw, women with disabilities tend to join the political race only through special seats which also disqualify them right during the intra party elections.

She cited the 2010 general election of which around 11 women with disabilities contested for special seats recorded by her Organization but to their heart break no body was elected at the party level mainly CCM.

“This time we have prepared ourselves to contest even in constituencies but we really urge the society to change their attitudes and treat us as equal partners”, she said.

She conceptualized the society as voters at the level of the party and the public as whole as well as the political party leaders.

Saada Hamad Ali, a member of the Organization said time is ripe for women with disabilities to venture into politics so that they can address the outstanding challenges facing the group.

She said the group faces massive Gender Based Violence (GBV) acts which more than often go unpunished.

Giving example she said for the year 2010 to 2014 more than 115 cases were reported across the country but only two cases were convicted.

Wanawake Wenye Ulemavu waitaka jamii iwapokee kisiasa
