TAMWA conducted a meeting with journalists to reflect on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Programme (GEWE II) implementation for year one. The programme is being implemented in ten districts of Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. The districts include, Kinondoni, Ilala, Kisarawe, Mvomero, Lindi Rural, Newala, Wete, Unguja West and Unguja South.

The journalists were also briefed on the activities implemented as well as the success that were achieved for the period of one year. The two year programme which started in October 2012 has been able to create awareness to the public through both electronic and print media, currently people from the programme area are now reporting GBV incidents compared before the commencement of the programme.

“TAMWA is now receiving phone calls and emails from GBV survivors across the whole of Tanzania who seek legal and counselling aid as a result of GEWE II implementation, people now do not consider GBV as a family matter, people are coming out and spoke without fear” said Happiness Bagambi GEWE II Progamme Assistant.

Additionally the journalists have high knowledge and skills in reporting gender based violence stories through the training done by TAMWA.

A total of 1515 GBV survivors were given legal and counselling aid in the programme area by other partners implementing the programme namely TAWLA, ZAFELA and TAMWA’s Crisis resolving Centre respectively.

On the other hand the journalists were also updated on the TAMWA’s campaign to reduce school pregnancy which is being supported by Foundation for Civil Society (FCS). The campaign is aimed at advocating on the ways of reducing the problem in secondary schools across Tanzania.

It was noted that between 2004 and 2008, a total of 28,590 schoolgirls in the country dropped out of school as a result of unwanted pregnancy. In 2007 alone 21.9% of all drop-outs recorded in Tanzanian secondary schools were due to pregnancy.

Finally, the journalists were asked to report gender based violence stories to raise more awareness on gender based violence in their communities.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

The Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) is a non-profit sharing, non-governmental and non-partisan organization registered under the Societies Ordinance on 17th of November, 1987 with registration number SO 6763. The Association in 2004 complied with the new NGO law of 2002. TAMWA has two offices in Dar -es- Salaam and Zanzibar. The office in Dar -es-Salaam situated at Sinza-Mori, along Shekilango Road, Kijitonyama, Kinondoni District, is Association's property.

The expected outputs of the TAMWA interventions: Reduced Gender based Violence and Violence against Children, reduced school pregnancies, child marriages, FGM, abandonment of women and children, maternal mortality and poverty in women in targeted areas. Enhance public awareness and action against corruption in all its forms and levels. Increase participation of women in decision-making levels. Improve maternal health. Increased awareness on impact of gender based violence and HIV infection among women.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Working under the supervision of the Senior Program Officer, the Program Officer will primarily be responsible for coordinating and administering.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produce Annual Work Plans and Action Plans of TAMWA in collaboration with Strategic Manager and SPOs
  • Writing, compiling and reviewing program reports – seek some support if needed
  • Take a lead in proposal writing in collaboration with Fundraising officer and project officers
  • In close collaboration with Senior Accountant, prepare budgets for various projects to ensure they are in line with advocacy activities under your coordination for smooth implementation and execution of activities
  • Advice Program Officers on project implementation
  • In collaboration with Strategic Manager and SPO, oversee planning processes for strategic directions of TAMWA
  • Coordinate the implementation of gender, capacity building and advocacy projects
  • Organize Annual Planning meeting
  • Supervise the provision of liaison services for problem solving and information sharing with members and stakeholders including Local Government Authorities (LGAs and CSO partners)
  • To maintain strong and productive relationships with partners and stakeholders. Also maintain excellent and healthy donor relations.
  • Perform any other project management duties as directed by the Executive Director

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:

  1. Master degree or equivalent in mass communication, journalism, development studies, public policy and the related.
  2. At least 5 years’ experience in media advocacy, planning, managing and implementing advocacy projects.
  • iii. Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate various responsibilities and prioritize conflicting demands and deadlines.
  1. The ability to complete tasks with limited supervision
  2. Good writing, analytical, research and problem solving skills.
  3. Experience in grant proposal writing/fundraising.
  • vii. Excellent reporting and document handling skills
  1. The ability to remain highly organized while handling multiple tasks under tight deadlines
  1. Must be computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  2. Excellent communication skills in order to be able to work with TAMWA partner/stakeholder staff to identify and resolve issues
  1. The ability to work effectively as part of a small team.

  • The ability to handle sensitive issues and address inclusion matters with integrity

Dar es Salaam. Wanahabari Wanawake 52 wamefanikiwa kujiunga na Chama cha Wanahabari Wanawake Tanzania -TAMWA mwaka huu hatua inayodhihirisha kuwa wigo wa kuripoti habari za ukatili wa kijinsia na usawa wa kijinsia, utaendelea kupanuka.

Wanachama  hao wapya  kutoka Tanzania Bara(26) na Visiwani(26)  wamejiunga kwa ajili ya kuongeza wigo katika harakati za kuondoa mifumo yote ya ukatili wa kijinsia na kuwawezesha kitaaluma wanahabari wanawake nchini.

Akizungumzia kujiunga kwa wanahabari wapya katika chama hicho Mkurugenzi wa TAMWA, Rose Reuben amesema kujiunga kwa wanahabari hao kunaongeza jitihada za kutetea haki za wanawake na watoto zenye mrengo wa kijinsia.

“Wakati huu tunapaswa kuwa na taarifa mbalimbali zenye mrengo wa kijinsia zitakazosaidia wananchi , watunga sera na  jamii kwa ujumla  kuelewa kwamba jamii yetu inahitaji sera na taarifa za kiuchumi na kijamii.”alisema

Reuben amesema,  wanahabari ambao hawajajiunga wakati ni sasa ili kuungana pamoja katika kuinuana kitaaluma, kuungana na wanawake kutetea haki za wanawake na watoto na kuongeza wingo wa wanawake kuungana na kuwa na sauti moja.

 Amesesitiza faida za kuwa mwanachama wa TAMWA ni kupata mkopo wa kujiendeleza kitaaluma katika stashahada ya kwanza au ya pili na baadae kurudisha mkopo huo bila riba.

“Pia kuna mafunzo ya kubadilishana taaluma (exchange program) zinazopatikana nchini na hata nje ya nchi, kumuongezea uwezo wa kitaaluma kwa mafunzo yanayotolewa na TAMWA kwa wanahabari, pamoja na kuandika taarifa mbalimbali za kijamii ambazo zitaweza kumuongeza zaidi katika taaluma yake,” alisema

 Ili kupitishwa  kuwa mwanachama unatakiwa kuwa na Diploma ya Habari, uzoefu katika fani ya uanahabari usiopungua miaka mitatu na kisha kupata wadhamini watatu ambao ni wanachama wa TAMWA.

Mwanachama mpya wa TAMWA, Bupe Mwakyusa, Mwandishi wa Mlimani TV ameelezea matarajio yake baada ya kuchaguliwa kuwa mwanachama  kuwa ni pamoja na kupata uzoefu zaidi katika taaluma ya habari na kushiriki katika miradi mbalimbali ya masuala ya kijinsia.

“Kilichonishawishi zaidi kujiunga TAMWA nikiwa mwanahabari ni kujifunza zaidi kuhusu taaluma ya habari pamoja na kupata maarifa zaidi kutoka kwa waliofanikiwa katika taaluma ya habari kupitia TAMWA, pia naamini kupitia TAMWA ntafika mbali zaidi”, alisema

TAMWA ilianzishwa mwaka 1987 na wanahabari wanawake nchini na mpaka sasa kina wanachama zaidi ya 100.

Mwandishi Wetu, TAMWA Dar es Salaam. Viongozi wapya wa Chama cha Wanahabari Wanawake Tanzania (TAMWA) wamefanya ziara katika vyombo vya habari jijini Dar es Salaam kwa ajili ya kujitambulisha.

 Viongozi hao, Mkurugenzi wa TAMWA, Rose Reuben na Mwenyekiti wa chama hicho, Joyce Shebe walitembelea vyombo vya habari kumi ikiwa ni awamu ya kwanza ya ziara hiyo.

Chama cha Wanahabari Wanawake Tanzania (TAMWA)kimefanya midahalo miwili iliyolenga kuwajengea uwezo wanawake na vijana namna ya kuzuia ukatili wa kijinsia, rushwa ya ngono na kuwepo kwa usawa wa kijinsia ndani ya vyombo vya habari.

Midahalo hiyo iliwalenga wanahabari na wabunge wanawake ili kuongeza idadi ya viongozi wanawake pamoja na kutengeneza mazingira salama yatakayowawezesha kufikia malego yao ya kiuongozi. Midahalo hiyo iliwashirikisha wabunge wanawake na wanahabari kutoka katika mikoa mitatu nchini.

TAMWA inatekeleza mradi wa miaka miwili wa kuwajengea uwezo wanawake na vijana katika vyumba vya habari unaofadhiliwa na International Media Support IMS.

Akizungumza wakati akifungua mdahalo wa wabunge, Naibu Spika wa Bunge Dk Tulia Ackson aliipongeza TAMWA na kusem imekuja mapema, wakati ndiyo mwanzo wa miaka mitano kukiwa na mambo mengi ya kuyaweka vizuri.

“Tuna mambo mengi ya kuyaweka vizuri na wanawake wenzetu, idadi hii ya wabunge inatakiwa kuongezeka walioko katika viti maalumu waende kugombea majimboni na wengine kuingi viti maalumu, amesema Dk Tulia amesema wanawake wabunge waliochaguliwa na kuteuliwa jukumu lao sio tu kuwakilisha vyama bungeni bali pia katika kuwatumikia wananchi ili kuongeza idadi ya wanawake viongozi zaidi nchini kufikia 50/50. “

Wakati ni sasa wa kujiwekea mipango madhubuti ya kuendelea kuwa viongozi, amesema Akizungumzia hofu ya wanawake kujitokeza kuzungumza mbele ya vyombo vya habari Dk Tulia amesema ni kutokanana hofu ya jinsi watakavoandikwa na kuzungumziwa.

Kwa upande wake, Mkurungezi wa TAMWA, Rose Reuben amesema wanawake waliopata nafasi za uongozi wapange mikakati ya kuangalia kuendelea kuwepo na wengine waongezeke kwa kuonyesha wigo mpana wa uongozi, kuonyesha ujasiri na kujitokeza kuzungumzia masuala ya wanawake katika vyombo vya habari.

Reuben amesema wabunge wanawake hawajitokezi kwa wingi katika vyombo vya habari hivyo ni vyema kijitokeza na kuzungumza ikiwa ni njia mathubuti za kujiinua zaidi kisiasa na kiuongoz. Wabunge wanawake waache kuhofia vyombo vya habari kwa kuwa mkiwa bungezi mna nafasi kubwa kuzungumzia na kutilia mkazo masuala ya ukatiki wa kijinsia hivyo kupunguza unyanyasaji dhidi ya wanawake,alisema Reuben amesema TAMWA iko tayari kushirikiana na wabunge wanawake katika kuwaelimisha namna ya kuvitumia vyombo vya habari pamoja na kutumia mitandao ya kijamii.

Kadhalika ameiomba Wizara ya Habari Utamaduni na Michezo iwe na Dawati la Jinsia litakalowasaidia wanahabari wanawake kupata kwa urahisi, eneo la kusemea pindi wanapokabiliwa na ukatili wa kijinsia, pia litakalowezesha masula ya kijinsia kuzungumziwa katika mikutano ya wafanyakazi.

Katika mdahalo wa waandishi wa habari, wanahabari walionyesha kutokuwepo kwa usawa wa kijinsia na kuwepo wa vitendo vya rushwa ya ngono katika vyumba vya habari Wanahabari wamesema zipo sera za jinsia ndani ya vyombo vya habari hazifuatwi wala kuzungumziwa ndani ya vyumba vya habari.

Pia katika mdahalo huo wanahabari wametoa mapendekezo ya kuwepo kwa madawati ya kijinsia kwenye vyumba vya habari ili kutoa taarifa kwa uhuru iwapo vitendo vya ukatili wa kijinsia vitatokea.
