PRESS RELEASE

LETS COMMEMORATE WOLRD AIDS DAY WHILE FIGHTING GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

Tanzania Media Women Organization (TAMWA) joins Tanzanians to commemorate World AIDS Day which is annually commemorated on 1st December where as it calls on members of the community to take collective initiative against gender based violence acts which contribute to spread of HIV/AIDS.

Among the acts which contribute to spread of HIV include rape, inheriting women, forced marriage, Female Genital Mutilation among others. Most of people subjected to such acts are women, girls and children.

According to the third Tanzania HIV and Malaria Indicator Survey 2011 – 2012 (THMIS III), overall, 5.1% of Tanzanians age 15-49 are HIV-positive. HIV prevalence is higher among women (6.2%) than among men (3.8%). In Mainland Tanzania, HIV prevalence among women and men age 15-49 has decreased from 7.0% in the 2003-04 to 5.3% in the 2011-12.

TAMWA believes that if the government and people in the society are not cooperative to each other in the fight against GBV this year’s theme “Tanzania without new HIV infections, Deaths caused by HIV/AIDS, Discrimination and Stigma is possible” cannot be realized.

However, TAMWA’s Anti Gender Based Violence (GBV) programme of Building and Strengthening Gender Equality and Eradication of Violence against Women and Children (GEWE II) through the media has been providing education on the awareness of gender based violence acts and their effects calling on the government and legal organs to put in place strategies that would alleviate such acts.

TAMWA believes that if incidents of Gender Base Violence on women and children are timely reported and legal action taken against perpetrators spread of HIV will be equally reduced.

School pregnancy or sometimes regarded as teenage pregnancy occur in girls who have not completed their primary or secondary school and have few or no remarkable skills, are financially dependent upon their parents and/or continues to live at home and are often immature. Teenage pregnancies remain a serious problem in Tanzania. It is estimated that at the age of seventeen or of eighteen 39%, of all females are either pregnant or already mothers

About one in 20 girls in Tanzania began child-bearing at the age of 15 years, and this rises sharply to one in four among 17 year olds. Girls in rural areas are almost twice as likely as girls in urban areas to start childbearing before they reach 19 years. More than half of girls with no education are mothers or pregnant before they reach 19 years, compared with about 25 per cent of those who completed primary school and less than five per cent of girls who attended secondary school. The government of Tanzania in conjunction with various organizations has been struggling to liberate women from Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Such efforts have proved successfully in different areas, because more women have started to understand their rights and claim them successfully.

Men too have reduced habits of mistreating their wives, thanks to effort from different Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) like Tanzania Media Women's Association (TAMWA) and Legal Service Facility (LSF).
